External Use Case

Sea Wave and coastal inundation detection Methodology (SWiM)

An algorithm for coastal inundation and wave breaking detection using camera images

Aim

Automated wave runup and wave detection from camera images, providing further characterisation of the beach morphology and automated procedures useful to the civil protection authorities for coastline surveillance during storm hazards.

Objectives and Challenges

The objective of this use case is to develop a methodology for automating the detection of wave runup and waves from camera images. This process will enhance the characterisation of beach morphology and enable automated reporting to civil protection authorities for monitoring the coastline during storm events.

The use case will utilise a collection of high-resolution sequential images captured by an existing camera at São Pedro de Moel in Portugal over a six-month period, from January to June 2022.

Expected Impact and Results

The SWiM use case Agile, real-time management of the beach and prevention of hazardous events, including evacuating people from danger zones and closing nearby roads.

The use case is related to the project MOSAIC – Safe Coastal Communities.
